R.A.D. BALLET EXAMS INFORMATION 2026

IMPORTANT GENERAL INFORMATION

The RAD (Royal Academy of Dance) offers Ballet students from Primary to Advanced 2 the opportunity to participate in annual exams. Exams are not compulsory. However, exams can offer students the opportunity to challenge themselves and provide focus in their class. Not all students are ready for the rigours of exams, and our teachers will advise whether they feel your child should participate. Teacher approval is mandatory for any student entering an exam.

PrePrimary Ballet students also have the opportunity to undergo an assessment conducted by an RAD examiner. The children participate in their class groups accompanied by their teacher, and work through their usual class syllabus while being observed by the examiner. Students who do not wish to do the assessment will still move on with their class next year provided their teacher feels they are ready.

If you are interested in your child taking part in exams you must ensure that he/she attends all classes throughout Term 2, including any required extra lessons. Exam students from Primary to Advanced 2 must also attend the Winter Vacation School held at Pirani Hall (please see details below). It is also a school requirement that all Term fees have been paid. No student will be permitted to submit an Exam entry until and unless all fees are paid up to date. Please contact our office if you have any questions or concerns.

The proposed dates for the RAD Ballet exams for Primary to Advanced 2 are in the weeks following the July School holidays. These dates, and the Pre-primary assessment date are yet to be confirmed.

Exams are conducted during standard work hours (usually 9am to 3.30pm Monday to Friday). Working parents should consider this when submitting an entry for their child, as the exam timetable is determined by the RAD, and the school has no way of altering it to suit parents’ schedules. Students usually go into their exam in small groups of 3 or 4 children. Each group will be assigned a specific time within the exam timetable. The length of time allotted for an exam varies according to grade, but they will run between 20 minutes and 90 minutes. Students must arrive at Pirani Hall correctly dressed and groomed at least 30 minutes before their assigned exam time.

All students in Primary to Advanced 2 who participate in an exam will receive a detailed report from the examiner on their performance. Students who successfully pass their exam will also receive a medal and a certificate from the RAD. Pre-primary students will not be awarded any marks but will receive an RAD medal and certificate.

VOCATIONAL EXAMS – INTERMEDIATE FOUNDATION TO ADVANCED 2

Vocational Ballet exams are demanding and exacting and are a significant step-up from the previous grades’ exams. Students are required to exhibit a high standard of strength, technique and understanding of the syllabus. This requires a strong commitment from students not just in class attendance, but in focus and attention in class. The examiner will mark students based on strict criteria, and a pass is not guaranteed. In Advanced 1 and 2 students must be given a pass-mark in each criterion, not just overall, to be awarded an overall pass for the exam.

Even with the best preparation and effort some students will not pass their exam. This is, of course, very disappointing and sometimes devastating for the student, their parents and their teachers. Our school will never reprimand or punish a student who does not pass an exam. We will offer whatever support is needed in terms of feedback and review, and try to ensure the student understands that this one setback does not mean they do not have a future in dance. It should be noted that it is quite rare for our students not to pass an exam, but parents should consider that possibility when entering their child in a Vocational Grade exam. It is also important to note that many fine dancers have failed on their first attempt at an exam but have still gone on to become successful professional dancers.

WINTER VACATION SCHOOL

Participation in the Winter Vacation School is compulsory for all exam students from Primary to Advanced 2. This is a wonderful opportunity for students to consolidate and polish their syllabus work ready for their exams under the tutelage of a R.A.D guest teacher - Ms Christine Atkinson for Primary to Grade 4 and Grade 8, and Ms Anna Veretennikova for the Vocational grades and Grade 7. Non- exam students from Grade 7 to Advanced are also welcome to attend and should complete the Vacation School registration available on our website.

Pre-Primary Ballet classes will run as usual during the June/July School Holidays and all children participating in the assessment MUST attend all classes.

Please do not enter your child for an exam if you are not prepared, or able to, ensure their attendance during the school holidays.

EXAM UNIFORMS AND GROOMING

All exam students must wear the specified uniform. Our school also expects a high level of personal grooming. Hair is to be worn in a Classical bun at ear height, unless otherwise advised by the class teacher. All hair must be smoothed back from the face and secured with hairspray or gel. No nail polish, tattoos, or jewellery of any kind to be worn. Students are not required to wear make-up.

ADA JAZZ, TAP AND CONTEMPORARY EXAMS

EXAM INFORMATION

JAZZ, TAP AND CONTEMPORARY

The Australasian Dance Association (ADA) offers students the opportunity to participate in annual exams in Jazz, Tap and Contemporary. Here are some important points to consider if your child is interested in doing an exam.

· Exams are offered from PrePrimary to Elementary Teachers in Jazz and Tap, and Levels 2, 3 and 4 in Contemporary.

· Exams are not compulsory. However, they can offer students the opportunity to challenge themselves and provide focus in their class. Not all students are ready for the rigours of exams, and our teachers will advise whether they feel your child should participate.

· The ADA offers an alternate assessment called the Class Performance Award (CPA) for students who teachers feel are not quite ready for the exam process. The CPA is a shortened format of the usual exam where students do not present all the Syllabus work as they would in the exam, just a few nominated pieces. The CPA is offered to students at the discretion of their teacher.

· Teacher approval is mandatory for any student entering an exam or CPA and will be verified before the entry is accepted

· Students will attend their exam or CPA in pairs or groups of 3 or 4.

· Students who successfully pass their exam or CPA will receive an examiner’s report, a medal and a certificate from the ADA.

· Attendance at all classes in Terms 1 & 2 is essential, including school holidays and any additional lessons required. Students in from Grade 5 to Bar-to-Gold must attend the ADA Vacation school (Timetable below). Students from Primary to Grade 4 must attend additional exam lessons to be scheduled on Sundays in May

· All fees must be up to date and exam fees must be paid by the due date.

The ADA exams will be held in early-mid June at Pirani Hall. Dates will be confirmed as soon as possible. Exams are conducted during standard work hours (usually 9am to 3.30pm Monday to Friday).

2026 Enrolments and Open Day Registrations are open!

Our 2025 dance year ended in fabulous style with our spectacular Annual Recital - "Beauty and the Beast". The reviews are in, and all say it was a stunning production that truly showed the depth of talent in our dancers and the dedication of our amazing staff. Congratulations to all.

Now we are getting ready for 2026. We are working on our timetable updates and will launch the new class schedule as soon as possible. Enrolments are now open to all new and returning students via our website.

In the meantime, don't miss our Open Day on Saturday 24th January at our studio located at 853 Flinders Street. New and returning students from 3 years to 12 years are invited to come along and try all of the dance class options available in their age group. See our Open Day Flyer for the class times.

Updates and news for September

Spring has sprung and we are now approaching the end of Term 3!

There is quite a lot happening in the next few weeks - Open Days, Townsville Eisteddfod and Sydney ADA Championships - so we thought you would appreciate an update.

Our Term 3 Open Days will be held in the last week of classes. Most classes are working hard on their recital items, or polishing their Eisteddfod groups, so in the majority of cases, parents will only come into the studio for the last 15 minutes or so of the lesson. Some classes have opted not to have an Open Day, as they have just begun recital work and don't feel they have enough to really show off just yet. Tiny Tots families are welcome to come along for the entire lesson. For new families, once a term we invite parents and family members to come into the studio to see what their child has been working on in class. You are welcome to take photos and videos during the Open Day, but please be mindful of the privacy of others if sharing.
The Townsville Eisteddfod Dance week commences on 20th September. We have dozens of students performing in solos, duos and trios, as well as 15 groups in Ballet, Jazz, Lyrical and Tap. We wish all our students well and hope they enjoy showing off all their hard work! There will be some extra rehearsals for the Eisteddfod Groups from 20th September. Eisteddfod group costumes can be collected from the Pirani Hall office on Friday 5th September 2pm-5pm and Saturday 6th September 9am-12pm . Please note that all fees and costume invoices must be paid before the costume can be issued.
On 27th September, Miss Jane and Andre will be heading to Sydney with a group of 44 dancers to perform at the Australasian Dance Association Championships. Our students will compete with students from around Australasia in groups, solos, duos and Syllabus sections proudly representing Townsville and our school. They will also have a few days to enjoy the sights of Sydney and take in a performance of "Back to the Future - The Musical".
There will be NO CLASSES FROM SATURDAY 20TH SEPTEMBER TO SUNDAY 5TH OCTOBER. Afternoon and Evening classes will resume on Monday 6th October. Teenies, Tiny Tots and other morning classes will resume on Tuesday 7th October.
Once we are back in Term 4 the rest of the year will fly by as we head towards the Annual Recital in December. Please remember to check your emails regularly for any important information. JUNE/JULY SCHOOL HOLIDAYS AND UPDATES

ACRO

All Friday Acro classes run throughout the school holidays.

The two Senior Saturday classes will combine from 10.00-11.00am on Saturday 28 ^th June and Saturday 5 ^th July.

ADULTS

All classes will run as usual throughout the school holidays, with the exception, of Monday 7 ^th July when there will be no Silver Swans due to the Show Day Public Holiday.

BALLET

Kinder and PrePrimary Ballet classes will run as usual throughout the school holidays.

PBT (Progressing Ballet Technique) will continue throughout the school holidays.

No regular classes for Primary to Grade 4 during both weeks of the school holidays. All students should attend the Vacation School from Monday 7 ^th to Friday 11 ^th July instead.

Grade 7, Intermediate Foundation and above will have regular classes throughout the school holidays in addition to the Vacation School, although there will be some time and studio changes as listed below to accommodate the Vacation Schools. The Vacation School from Monday 30 ^th June to Friday 4 ^th July is compulsory for all exam students.

TERM 3 UPDATES

Once the Ballet exams are completed in early August, there may be some changes to the Ballet timetable to accommodate groups for the Townsville Eisteddfod. These will be advised as soon as possible.

EISTEDDFOD GROUPS

We are entering several groups in the Townsville Eisteddfod in Ballet, Jazz, Tap and Contemporary. Performances will be from 20 ^th to 27 ^th September at the Civic Theatre. In some cases, we have formally sought expressions of interest from students who would like to take part, and in other cases the teachers have spoken with students and parents to gauge interest. All students taking part must attend all lessons in Term 3, as well as any additional rehearsals required. The timetable for group rehearsals ihas been emailed and is available on "In the Loop". Some groups have begun working on their Eisteddfod routines, while others will start after the Ballet exams in early August. We will advise exact start dates as soon as possible.

ADA CHAMPIONSHIPS SYDNEY

This year sees us take our largest ever group of dancers to the Sydney ADA Championships. The dancers will compete in Syllabus sections, solos, Duos/Trios and groups, and will also get to experience Masterclasses with national and international guest teachers. The timetable for group rehearsals has been emailed and is available on "In the Loop". Some groups have begun working on their Eisteddfod routines, while others will start after the Ballet exams in early August. We will advise exact start dates as soon as possible.

RECITAL INFORMATION 2025

“BEAUTY AND THE BEAST”

Our Annual Recital is seen by most of our students and teachers as the highlight of our school year. It involves all students from Kinder to Senior giving them the opportunity to perform in a fully developed production at Townsville’s wonderful Civic Theatre. We encourage you to read all the information in this note carefully to ensure you are happy for your child to participate.

IMPORTANT GENERAL INFORMATION

Ann Roberts School of Dance has a reputation for presenting an excellent, entertaining recital with outstanding production qualities, and our students have a brilliant time performing in it. Of course, it takes an enormous amount of planning and coordination to make this happen and we rely upon the cooperation of our parents and families to ensure everything runs smoothly and the students have a great experience.

There are three performances of the recital: Friday 5 ^th December 6pm; Saturday 6 ^th December 1pm and Saturday 6 ^th December 6pm. The Friday and Saturday matinee performances will feature our youngest students – Kinder to Primary – in a special Prologue. This allows our little ones to be part of the show without having to stay up too late. All other students from Grade 1 and up will perform in all three shows.

If you are happy for your child/children to take part in the recital we must receive a completed permission form for each student via our website by Saturday 14 ^th June. If you have difficulty submitting online, please contact the office by email.

Costume invoices will then be sent out and we must receive payment by 28 ^th June.

In addition to the Costume costs, there will be a Theatre Levy of $45 per child. In recent years the cost of hiring the theatre and associated staff have risen enormously, and we can no longer cover these costs with ticket sales alone. Regretfully, this means we need to apply this additional levy to all students in the recital.

If your child is NOT taking part in the recital, we also need formal notification of this by email, or it will be assumed that they are participating, and a costume will be ordered.

We are not able to offer any refund once the costume is ordered.

PERFORMANCES

Prologue- Kinder to Primary – 2 performances – Friday 5 ^th December at 6.00pm and

Saturday 6 ^th December at 1.00pm

Main Concert – 3 performances – Friday 5 ^th December at 6.30pm,

Saturday 6 ^th December at 1.30pm and Saturday 6 ^th December at 6.30pm.

· Ballet students in Grades 3 and above are invited to perform in the Finale. Students in Grades 3 & 4 performing in the Finale will require their own white tutu , comprised of a white Lycra leotard with separate Tutu skirt, in addition to their other costumes. First Class Dancewear has tutus available for sale. They will also have a tutu overlay, a headpiece, or other embellishments which are provided by the school at an additional cost - $50. Students in InterFound and Intermediate will use a costume hired from the school – a hire fee of $50 will apply. Advanced 1 and 2 students will use a hired tutu at a cost of $60.

· Payment for all costumes must be made no later than Saturday 28 ^th June. Please note that if, after paying for the costume, your child is unable to perform in the concert, no refunds can be given. We cannot make any changes, once costumes are ordered. If you foresee any problem in paying by 28 ^th June, please contact our office as soon as possible.

· For those families with children in multiple items requiring multiple costumes, we are happy to arrange a payment plan option for the costume costs. Just contact our office by email before the due date to discuss.

· Recital tickets will go on sale at the beginning of November and are available from the Townsville Civic Theatre and associated booking sites. All parents, family members and friends who wish to see the performance must have a valid ticket, as do any students who plan to watch any section of the concert.

COSTUMES

We order our costumes from Australian suppliers and try to keep the costs as low as possible. To ensure timely delivery of our costumes, they are ordered and paid for in early July which is why we require payment in advance.

Students will be measured for costumes by teachers in class.

Once we have reached the closing date for the return of permission notes, the costumes will be finalized, and invoices sent.

If you foresee any difficulty in paying for your costumes immediately, please contact our office.

Costume fees are capped at a set price according to grade.

Once the costumes have arrived Teachers may bring them to class to try on the students. Costumes will not usually be distributed in class at that time. Parents must come to the office to collect the costumes so that payment can be verified.

Each class will have a Costume Display class in the final weeks before the recital when parents are invited to watch their child performing in costume with their class group. It is vital that each child has a parent or carer attending these Costume Displays as important information will be relayed regarding hair and make-up requirements, theatre rehearsals and performances.

CONDITIONS FOR STUDENT PARTICIPATION IN THE RECITAL

v Students must attend all classes in terms 3 and 4.

Classes that have only one class per week will start recital work from the beginning of Term 3. If your child will be absent from class for any reason, other than illness, you must advise the teacher before submitting your permission form.

v Students must attend all additional recital rehearsals including the “Full Run” rehearsals at Pirani Hall and all rehearsals at the Civic Theatre.

v All fees must be paid, including Term fees, Eisteddfod and private lessons, Exams and Vacation Schools.

v Costume Invoices will be sent to all families who have returned completed permission forms. Closing date for permission notes is 14 ^th June. The costume invoice will include the Theatre Levy of $40 per child.

v Full costume payment must be received by our office not later than Saturday 29 ^th June, unless a payment plan has been formally established.

v Ballet students in Intermediate Foundation and above must attend three classes per week to be eligible to participate in the Finale.

These conditions are compulsory for all students and will be strictly adhered to.

RECITAL REHEARSALS

Most recital preparation and rehearsal will be done in usual class time, so it is vital that your child attends all classes in Terms 3 and 4.

Ballet students participating in the Finale will be required to attend some additional rehearsals and these will be advised as soon as possible.

There are some very important additional rehearsals for all students taking part in the recital and they are:

FULL RECITAL RUN REHEARSALS – Saturday 15 ^th and Sunday 16 ^th November

As the name suggests these two rehearsals allow us to run the concert with every item in order. Both rehearsals are held at Pirani Hall. They provide the teachers with an insight into the continuity of class items and help establish efficient entrances and exits for each class. They also provide our production crew with the opportunity to gauge requirements in terms of lighting, set, props and microphones.

· Main Concert on Saturday 15 ^th November from 2.45pm, and

· Prologue and Main Concert on Sunday 16 ^th November from 10am.

No costumes are required – just usual dancewear. Students are not necessarily required to stay for the whole rehearsal. We will allocate an approximate performance time for each class item, and students can leave once they have finished their item. Of course, students who are in multiple items will be required to stay until they have performed all of their routines. A detailed schedule will be sent out by email as soon as possible – usually early in Term 4.

CIVIC THEATRE REHEARSALS

From Wednesday 3 ^rd December there will be no more classes at any of our studios. All students will instead be required to attend rehearsals at the Civic Theatre.

CIVIC THEATRE PROTOCOLS

All students will be assigned a dressing room, either in the main section of the theatre, or in C2 – the addition at the rear of the building. All dressing rooms are shared, communal spaces.

NO PARENTS WILL BE PERMITTED IN DRESSING ROOMS, GREEN ROOM OR BACKSTAGE .

We will establish a ‘check-in’ desk at the entrance to C2 where parents will drop off their child or children. They will then be taken to their designated dressing room area where they will be supervised by staff or senior students. They can be collected from the same desk immediately following their performance or at the end of the Act in which they perform.

All students arrive dressed in costume and fully groomed for their performance. If they are going into the theatre to watch the remainder of the performance, please pack a change of clothes.

THEATRE REHEARSALS AND PERFORMANCES – RULES AND TIPS

The Don’t list

× No children are allowed out of the theatre without a parent or guardian.

× No parents are allowed into the auditorium during rehearsals or backstage during rehearsals and performances

× There will be no loitering or running in theatre corridors. Children must remain in dressing rooms unless on stage.

× Costumes are not to be left at theatre overnight. All belongings must be taken home after each rehearsal & performance.

× No jewellery is to be worn on-stage - including earrings – unless as a specified part of a costume. No member of staff will take responsibility for jewellery.

× No nail polish or tattoos to be worn.

× Glitter is not permitted anywhere at the theatre. This is Townsville Civic Theatre policy.

THEATRE REHEARSALS AND PERFORMANCES – RULES AND TIPS

The Do list

ü Name your child’s costume, shoes and all other belongings – remember there will be dozens of children with exactly the same costume and shoes.

ü Ensure that all fees, payments for costume hire, costumes and accessories have been paid before we start rehearsals at the theatre.

ü Bring your own repair kit with safety pins, needle & thread (white/black), Band-Aids, hair-ties, bobby pins & hairpins, hairspray & gel.

ü Purchase a ticket for your child if they are going to watch the earlier or remaining sections of the Recital. If your child is watching prior to performing please ensure they have their hair and make-up already done. Please ensure your child has an appropriate change of clothes as no costumes are to be worn in the auditorium.

ü Let a teacher or another parent know if your child is going in to watch before or after their item so they can help them change in or out of their costume if necessary.

ü Students will be allocated a dressing room, with many of our younger students positioned in C2 (the annex at the rear of the theatre). Children must be taken to the check-in desk at the rear of the theatre or C2 and must be collected from the same.

ü Students will not be permitted to leave the theatre without a parent or guardian. We will not allow them to go out to the carpark to find their parent/guardian.

ü Bring a snack and water bottle – no cordial, soft drinks, lollies or other potentially sticky, messy foods.

ü Be on time to enter the auditorium for the performance . If you are late you won’t permitted into your seats until the next intermission.

Saturday 15 ^th November Full Run Rehearsal – Main Concert only

Sunday 16 ^th November Full Run Rehearsal – Prologue and Main Concert

Pirani Hall from 10am

Monday 24th to

Saturday 29th November Costume display classes.

Schedule to be advised in Term 4.

Tuesday 2 ^nd December Final regular classes for 2025

Wednesday 3 ^rd December Civic Theatre Bump-in & Rehearsals as required

Thursday 4 ^th December Civic Theatre Rehearsals as required

Friday 5 ^th December Performance: Prologue & Main Concert 6pm

Saturday 6 ^th December Performance: Prologue & Main Concert – 1.00pm

Performance:s Main Concert 6pm

IF WE DO NOT RECEIVE NOTIFICATION, WE WILL ASSUME YOUR CHILD IS TAKING PART AND YOU WILL RECEIVE AN INVOICE FOR A COSTUME.

Our Term 1 Open Days schedule has been emailed to all families today. We invite all parents, and any other interested family members to come along to their child's class and see how they are progressing. you are welcome to take photos and videos during the Open Day, but please be mindful of the privacy of others if sharing on social media. Open Days are held in the usual class time and studio.

Our Teeny Tots and Tiny Tots will have their moment in the spotlight on Sunday 1st December. Our annual Teenies and Tiny Tots Concert will be held in Studio 4 at our Flinders Street studios from 10am. Family and friends are welcome to come along and watch our tiniest dances shine. No costumes and no stress involved - just lots of fun and a few suprises! Tickets will be on sale from our reception desk at Flinders Street very soon.
